Track your cellar with Selara Sommelier

A wine cellar tracking app for iPhone and the web. Selara Sommelier keeps your wine inventory, drinking windows, locations and collection value in one place.

A wine cellar is easy to start and hard to keep track of. The first few cases fit in your head. Then there's a second rack, a few bottles in a storage unit, a mixed case from an auction, and a spreadsheet you last updated sometime in the spring.

Selara Sommelier is a wine cellar tracking app for iPhone and the web, built for collectors, by collectors. It keeps one record of what you own and where it is, tells you when each bottle should be ready, and helps you decide what to open next. Here's what it does.

Get your wine in without retyping it

The hardest part of any wine inventory app is the first afternoon. Selara Sommelier gives you three ways in, and you can mix them.

Bring your spreadsheet

Drag and drop the file you already keep. Selara Sommelier reads .csv, .tsv, .tab, .txt, .xlsx, .xls, .json, .numbers and .xml, matches your columns to its fields, and marks anything it wants you to check. You see a preview before a single bottle is added, and if you pick the wrong file you can remove the import along with the bottles it brought in. Every plan can import up to 10,000 rows and 25 MB per file.

Coming from another cellar app? Our export guides show how to get your data out of several popular ones, and switching cellar apps walks through the move.

Photograph a label

For a single bottle, take a photo. Selara Sommelier reads the label and fills in the details for you to approve. It copes with dim restaurant lighting and even faded handwritten labels.

Drop in an invoice

After a delivery, add the merchant's PDF or an auction settlement and choose the line items you want. A photo of a paper invoice, or of a screen showing one, works too.

A cellar book that fits how you think

Your wine lands in a cellar book, a spreadsheet-style view of every bottle you hold. You can change its layout whenever you like without rebuilding anything.

Track storage location, producer, name, vintage, appellation, grape, bottle size, quantity, price per bottle in more than one currency, total purchase price, drink-soon flags, tasting notes and invoice details. Choose which columns show and in what order. Sort by price today and by vintage tomorrow.

Two ways of organizing come with every plan. Restaurant Wine List groups wines by color, then country, then region, with appellation as an option. Auction House sorts them into the collector categories you'll recognize from sale catalogs, such as Red Bordeaux, White Burgundy, Champagne and Port. On Grand Cru and above, a custom taxonomy wizard lets you design your own.

Know where every bottle lives

Every bottle carries its storage location, so you're not opening three boxes to find one magnum.

  • Premier Cru tracks one location with flat storage.
  • Grand Cru tracks up to three locations, with storage nested up to three levels, such as Room, then Rack, then Slot.
  • Grand Cru Exceptionnel has unlimited locations, nesting up to ten levels, and spatial bins, a visual map of each location that shows where your wines sit in the room.

Drinking windows for your wines

Each wine page has a drinking window curve that shows where the bottle sits today and how its window opens and closes over time. Selara Sommelier estimates it from the wine's details, including color, region, grape, producer, appellation, classification and vintage. On Grand Cru and above, it uses GrapeMinds drinking-window data when that's available. Spirits and sake don't get a table-wine curve and are marked No window.

Each bottle gets a readiness label, from Early and Approaching through Entering prime, In prime and Late prime to Drink now. You can sort and filter the cellar book by them. Your dashboard shows what's ready now and what to open soon, including anything you've flagged yourself. If you like, you can turn on emails about your collection in your account settings, such as notices about bottles approaching their drinking window.

For the wine side of this, read when to drink wine.

See what your collection is worth

On Grand Cru and Grand Cru Exceptionnel, market value shows your cellar's estimated total value with the date of the latest figures, your most valuable holdings, and your top gains against what you paid. Each wine gets an average retail price with its low and high range, a critic score and a price history. Retail prices and critic scores come from wineapi.io. Drinking windows, grapes and style come from GrapeMinds.

These figures are cached and refresh periodically. They're personal estimates for thinking about your own cellar, not an appraisal, insurance valuation or tax advice. Market value is live has the full tour.

If you sell, the sell ledger on Grand Cru and above tracks bottles through to-sell and sold, with proceeds and realized gains, and exports to CSV and PDF.

Open a bottle in one click

Planning a dinner? Stage the bottles you might open. They stay in your cellar record and show up in a staged list. Afterward, one click moves each bottle you opened into your history, where you can keep tasting notes, and the rest go back where they were. You can also put together a wine list for your guests and print it or save it as a PDF.

Ask your cellar a question

The built-in AI assistant knows your cellar, so you can ask in plain language. How many magnums do I have? What's ready to drink? What pairs with tonight's meal? What might I enjoy adding? It can also make changes for you, from fixing an accent mark to reorganizing the whole cellar, and it asks before it changes anything.

Premier Cru includes 8 AI uses a month. Grand Cru includes a generous allowance, and Grand Cru Exceptionnel is unlimited.

A map of where your wine comes from

On Grand Cru and above, the Origins map puts your cellar on a world map as producer pins, with wine, sake and spirits together. Open a pin to see what you own from that place, jump into any of those wines, or ask the assistant about it.

Share the work

On Grand Cru Exceptionnel, household sharing lets you invite delegates to help look after the collection, so nobody has to pass a spreadsheet around.

On your iPhone and on the web

Selara Sommelier has an iPhone app and works on the web, so the same cellar is with you at home, in the shop and at the auction preview. It's available in English, French, Spanish, Italian and German. Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and when the assistant runs, it sends only what's needed to answer, to providers that don't keep prompts for training.

What it costs

Premier Cru is free for up to 100 bottles in one location. Selara Sommelier is in the final stages of beta testing, and every user is invited to use the free Beta tier, which has everything in Grand Cru Exceptionnel. When testing is over, changing your account tier won't affect your wine data. Selara Sommelier plans explained covers every plan in detail.

Start tracking your cellar

Create an account, bring in your spreadsheet or photograph a few labels, and open your dashboard. Once your bottles are in, it shows what you have, where it is, and what's ready to drink.
